Our prayers for an ethereal theme for the Met, 2018 had definitely been answered, when this year’s theme: ‘Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination’ had been revealed. The dresses were nothing short of exemplary, ecclesiastical, phantasmagorical and of course, mesmerizing. However, some definitely reached heaven and some, went straight down to internet hell.

Those who flew to the Pearly Gates:

Lena Waithe in Carolina Herrera

Lena’s beautifully-caused ensemble definitely won the category of boldest statement, along with all our hearts. Her crisp black pant-suit as sleek and sharp, and it was supported by her billowy pride cape representing all of the LGBTQ community.

Katy Perry in Versace

Katy surely made a stunning statement with her gorgeous outfit. She looked like a shiny gladiator angel in her iridescent gold dress and snowy white wings. She, for sure, flew to heaven with the title of most glamorous angel!

Zendaya in Versace:

Zendaya looked dangerously sexy and gave some serious Game of Thrones vibes in what must be the fiercest outfit ever, with a silver-chainmail and black widow-esque hair. She looked like she was charging straight into battle after being crowned the title of the most badass Joan of Arc, with all of us loyally behind her.

Rihanna in Margiela

Rihanna was hands-down, the queen of the event, as she looked nothing short of Christian royalty, in that prepossessing hand-stitched, bejeweled, papal ensemble. She was dressed as her holiness and was definitely crowned most stunning pope.

Cardi B in Moschino

Our queen Cardi slayed us all, looking like the most gorgeous fertility goddess. She was the most extravagant mum-to-be in that specially-designed bedazzled Moschino gown and crown that served looks left, right and center. She really won best maternity wear that was out there!

Ariana Grande in Vera Wang

Ariana Grande showed the world how exactly should one slay at their first Met Gala. The 24-year-old pop royalty elegantly showed us just how well she deserves that title, in what has to be one of the most dainty, feminine and gorgeous gown with the scene of the Last Judgement on the luscious silk and satin. Her gown was arguably the most enjoyably literal translation of the theme, and we are loving her for it!

Chadwick Boseman in Versace

In the midst of a black sea of men in their boring dress-shirts and blazers and one outrageous Gucci-Jesus Jared Leto, Chadwick Boseman reeeeaaally stood out. He looked smart and sleek in that crisp white-gold ensemble and hands-down, won best dressed male. All we can say is, that if men came to church dressed like this, we would definitely go to church more often!

Kim Kardashian-West

Without a shade of doubt, Kim K looked like a gorgeous barbie doll in her gold, slinky metallic number. However, it left everyone thinking the same thing: she looked like she was going to the night-club, rather than a prestigious, themed-Hollywood event. Save a sorry, stitched-cross, her dress gave no other indication to the theme and ended up making her look like a shiny golden disco ball. Maybe next year, Kimberly!

Amal Clooney in Richard Quinn

Even Amal’s voluminous and shiny train could not distract us from the fact that this was one of the most underwhelming dresses out there in the entire gala. Even her wrinkled pants seem to agree with us! She didn’t look bad, it’s just that was it: not bad.

Selena Gomez in Coach

Our first reaction when we saw Selena was: meh. Unforgettable and extremely underwhelming. In fact, it looked like a grandma’s old and comfortable nightgown. Yes, that is something we’d definitely wear – to bed. She also went a tad bit overboard with the spray-tan. All-in-all, not a good look Sel!

Sara Jessica Parker in Dolce and Gabbana

Whilst wearing a whole Nativity scene thoroughly conforms with the given theme, it could lead to an explosion of visual stimuli. That’s exactly what happened to SJP’s well-meaning and nicely attempted outfit, that unfortunately was a huge fail, as many found it gaudy an “migraine inducing”.

Zoe Kravitz

Minimalism is a trend that is currently taking the fashion world by storm, but here, in this case, it did not wow anybody. Although Zoe looked very smoky and seductive, we were very confused. Her thin, barely-there lace veil, that she wore on her body failed to send across the theme and did not make a statement, amidst some very creatively gorgeous outfits.
