Food – Less Wastage, More Usage

Food – Less Wastage, More Usage

Food wastage is a serious issue and is more worrying by the day. Did you know the amount of wasted food each year is enough to feed over one billion hungry stomachs? Instead, over 95% of the food wasted ends up in landfills, rotting away. Looking back, childhood was fun wasn’t it? Getting into food fights during lunch break at school, or spreading dinner all over the plate to fool mum? Maybe feeling a tinge of guilt is now natural, but it is not too late. In fact, now is when you can truly make an effect. No, we don’t mean overeating and stuffing yourself until your plate is empty. Rather, easier, practical ways to reduce wastage.

1. But Why Should I?

Apart from the starving children in Africa, there are numerous reasons to reduce your food wastage. First off, buying less food will save money. Or maybe go for quality over quantity. Other benefits include reduction of carbon emissions and conservation of natural energy resources. The best thing you can do however, would be to donate the food for one less hungry stomach.

2. Tips On Reducing Wastage

A. Shop Smart
With a pre-planned shopping list in hand you’re less likely to buy things you won’t consume. It helps avoid impulse buys and ensures you waste less food and produce.
B. Hey Honey, It Looks Funny
No, we’re not saying buy bad food. However, if the Tomato isn’t perfectly rotund, it’s all right. Usually these perfectly fine food items are discarded as waste. So buy funny looking fruits #SaveOurTomatoes. We used every funny looking Tomato we could find for our Soup-er Soup
C. Practice FIFO
It stands for First In, First Out. When unpacking groceries, move older products to the front of the fridge/freezer/pantry and put new products in the back. This way, you’re more likely to use up the older stuff before it expires.
D. Take Stock
Note upcoming expiration dates on foods you already have at home, and plan meals around the products that are closest to their expiration.
E. To Hell With Landfills
Find it tough to change old habits? Not a problem, why don’t you donate the excess food to a charity? Divert it away from another decomposing landfill. We would all love one less grumbling tummy!

3. More Ways To Go Green

Who said this is the only way to ‘do your bit’? There are a lot of ways to create a sustainable lifestyle, one example would be saving electricity and conserving water. Next time you go out, ensure every light is switched off; how would you like it if someone turned you on and left you there? We’re also big fans of renewable energy (see what we did there?). Hop on board the renewable energy bandwagon and make the world a better place!
